Optical Surfaces Ltd. has been producing large and demanding high precision optical components and systems for more than 40 years and is today internationally acknowledged for its technical expertise, attention to quality and customer service.

With the main workshops and test facilities deep underground in an area excavated from solid chalk, temperatures remain constant year-round and vibration is practically non-existent. These are important considerations when making, mounting and testing high precision optics. Working with these natural advantages Optical Surfaces ltd. is able to supply high precision off-axis parabolas, spherical and flat mirrors, etalons, aspherics, reference flats, windows, collimators and beam expanders for the most demanding applications. With such stable conditions testing, particularly with long path lengths, becomes quantifiable and reliable. Investment in large aperture Fizeau, Zygo GPI, Flashphase, Twyman Green, Scatterplate, and Laser Unequal Path interferometers allows detailed testing of the largest diameter optics. Topographic and fringe analysis provides precise testing of surface roughness and confirms the wavefront of various surface forms. A rolling program for calibration of test optics where possible to national standards and production approval to ISO 9001-2000 ensure that the quality of optics from Optical Surfaces is second to none.

ETALONS


Etalon plates are used in Fabry-Perot interferometers and come in to two basic types, air-spaced or solid.
In an air-spaced system they comprise two very flat plates, coated to give high resolution in the spectral range of interest. They are made to face each other while separated by an air gap, provided by spacers of identical length. Usually, the back face of each plate is wedged and AR coated to eliminate interferometric contribution from these surfaces.
A solid Etalon is a simpler instrument; it is usually a fused silica substrate with very flat and parallel faces, with reflector coatings applied to the two faces. Optical Surfaces has built up a worldwide reputation for producing these super-flat components, supplying many customers in scientific institutes, observatories and industry.

Customer News Story


Optical Surfaces has supplied a set of 165mm Fabry-Perot Etalons, matched to L/150 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The plates are the heart of the Millstone Hill Atmospheric science facility operated in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh. The purpose of this instrument is to measure Doppler shifts in the atmosphere.
