AO system overview

OKO AO system for amateur telescope

Flexible Optical BV supplies complete closed-loop adaptive optical systems for real-time correction of optical aberrations and generation of precision wavefronts. Please see below a short video illustrating the typical performance of our AO system, or click here to download it in DIVX format.
Applications include scientific instrumentation, astronomy, ophthalmology, laser optics and optical alignment systems. Click here for published work based on our mirrors.

We supply closed-loop AO systems based on Micromachined Membrane Deformable Mirrors (MMDM) with up to 79 channels and Piezoelectric Deformable Mirrors (PDM) with 19, 37, 79 and 109 channels. Aberration correction is possible in  circular, rectangular, annular, elliptic and annular elliptic apertures.   The feedback frame rates of 30 ... 1500 fps,  depending on the camera and computer used,   are sufficient for correction of  aberrations caused by the atmospheric turbulence.

Real-time AO phase control is realized by our FrontSurfer Hartmann-Shack WF sensor, offering a wide variety of control options including SVD eigenmode analysis, mode filtering, operations with the background, etc .

We can also supply deformable mirror systems with
linear 19 and 38-ch MMDM and 20-ch PDM for ultrafast pulse shaping. These application-specific systems should be controlled by a customer-made feedback sensors and software.

Wavefront Sensors

Our wavefront sensor systems include:

  • FrontSurfer stand-alone software for Windows or Linux. The program reconstructs the wavefront from a spot pattern obtained with hexagonal, orthogonal or random Hartmann (-Shack) mask with arbitrary number of subapertures. The software supports standard video interfaces on Windows and Linux. In "Alignment" mode the software is capable of real-time dynamic display of low-order aberrations in polar coordinates or bar-graph format. In the feedback mode, the program couples with OKO deformable mirror and can be used for low-cost real-time adaptive optics.

  • FrontSurfer calibrated Hartmann masks with hexagonal and orthogonal geometries, designed to work with 1/2 inch CCD arrays. Can be supplied as a stand-alone component (square 10x10mm) or in a C-mount compatible head.

  • Wide range of microlens arrays for Hartmann-Shack sensors. Each array can be supplied standalone, or mounted in a C-mount compatible head.

  • FrontSurfer - compatible HR CCD and CMOS cameras with PC video interface for Windows and Linux operating systems.

Electronics

Our standard adaptive optical systems are based on Windows PCs, high-voltage amplifiers and digital-to-analog converters (DAC) serving as interface between a PC and an amplifier. We have developed a number of interfaces and amplifiers that allow to control high-voltage deformable mirrors with up to 2 kHz frequency, voltage up to 400V with a precision of 8 (PCI), 12 (USB), or 16 (Ethernet) bits.

OKO PCI boards allow to control up to 24 channels with a single board, the number of boards per PC is practically unlimited. The refresh time is better than 1 microsecond per channel, all channels of the board can be controlled independently in any order.

A single USB DAC or Ethernet DAC module allows to control 40 channels with refresh frequency of 1 or 2 kHz and precision of 12 or 16 bits. These modules can be used in parallel to control 80, 120... etc. channels with refresh frequency of up to 2 kHz.

To drive adaptive optics devices with small number of actuators, such as tip-tilt correctors we offer special scaled-down 4-channel vesion of USB DAC.
